At the heart of this pendant is an amethyst backed with Paua shell. On its own, the amethyst is a quiet violet. Layered over the shell, it becomes something else entirely — green, rose and gold moving beneath the faceted surface as you turn, the way a mineral seam catches a lamp in a museum drawer. It is a color that changes with candlelight, with the room, with the hour. Because no two pieces of Paua are alike, this stone exists exactly once.

The design in inspired by a specimen box. The stone rests inside a hand fabricated frame of oxidized sterling silver, textured by hand so the surface holds light unevenly, like weathered iron. 8 prongs hold it without crowding it.

Above the box rises an Art Deco arch. Its rays are finished with pearl powder, bound to the metal using Maki-e, the Japanese lacquer technique refined over centuries of Urushi work — giving a soft, shifting luminosity. At its center, a sun of pure 24K gold, fused directly to the silver by Keum Boo, an ancient method in which gold foil is bonded to silver under heat and pressure rather than plated. It will not wear away. Sunrise over a specimen box: the moment something long kept in the dark is finally brought out and looked at.

Below the stone sits a small stepped plaque carrying my house mark and the 925 purity stamp. These are normally struck on the reverse, out of sight. I brought them to the front and made them part of the composition — not as a logo, but as a signature. Nobody across a dinner table will read them or recognize them; they are not there to tell anyone what you are wearing. They are there the way a artist's label sits at the base of a case: a small, deliberate record that a particular hand made this, on a particular day, once.

Wear it to a dinner, a concert, an opening, an evening you will want to remember.

Entirely hand fabricated in my studio in Japan. One of a kind.
