This pendant captures the quiet beauty of blossoms at dusk, translated into metal through a process as deliberate and contemplative as the Japanese ink paintings — Suibokuga — that inspired it.
The face of the pendant is oxidized sterling silver, darkened to evoke a twilight sky. Against that deep ground, branches and blossoms emerge in fine silver foil, fused directly into the sterling base by the technique called Keum Boo and selectively polished so they seem to be brighter with their own soft light. The contrast between the dark oxidized field and the light gray foil is the heart of the piece — the same interplay of shadow and light that defines Suibokuga.
The frame draws on traditional Japanese sword craft. The decorative corner elements at the top and bottom are inspired by the Ishizuki, the fitting found at the tip of a Japanese sword sheath, giving the pendant a quietly architectural, heirloom quality. Both the frame components and the bail share a hand-applied texture that ties the whole piece together.
Turn the pendant over and the story continues. The back is fully finished in the same oxidized sterling silver, and features a quietly striking composition: a crescent moon and a wisp of cloud, rendered in the same fine silver foil technique as the blossoms on the front. The two sides speak to each other — blossoms in the evening on one face, the moon emerging through clouds on the other. Together they evoke a complete nocturnal scene, a single moment suspended between dusk and night.
Everything here — the fabrication, the foil work, the oxidation, the selective polishing — is entirely handmade by the artist. No casting, no mass production.
A piece for those who appreciate the beauty of things made slowly, by hand, with intention.
